A New Covenant From the Lord (Jer.31:31-34/Ps.51/Hebrews 5:7-9/John 12:20-23)

"But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it upon their hearts; and I will be their God and they shall be my people" Jeremiah 31:33

the covenant that the Lord had with His people in the old dispensation was not bad in itself, but it failed because the people did not keep to the terms of the covenant. They disobeyed God and became unfaithful.

The Lord did not allow his children to be destroyed because of their disobedience, Instead, He sent His Son to come and restore and ratify what was lost in the first covenant by his obedience and by shedding of his blood. Jesus became obedient to the Father and He laid down an example for us to follow if we intend to please the Father and keep to the terms of the new covenant.

The New covenant is written in our hearts and not on the tablet of stones. Therefore, by virtue of our baptism we have the terms of this new covenant laid upon us and if we must please the Lord we must learn from His Son our Lord Jesus Christ to remain faithful to God. This is the only way we will be a people for Him and He will be our God.

Jesus has shown us an example of what faithfulness is by coming to this world and dying on the cross for us at calvary in order to bring us salvation. If we must please the Lord we must follow the way of Jesus Christ who became obedient even unto death. Saint Paul tells us in the second reading that Jesus learnt obedience through what He suffered, and being made perfect he became a source of eternal salvation to all those who obey Him. This means that all that the Lord requires of us is faithfulness to His laws and decrees.

We will discover who Jesus is when we seek Him with our whole heart and He will tell us the truth about Himself, that is, that if we follow Him we must be willing to go through the way of the cross and it will help us to remain steadfast and by so doing we will gain eternal life.

Every day is a new opportunity for us to keep to the terms of agreement in the new covenant and we must work hard to do so. We must choose obedience to God over other things of this life, both material and pleasure. This is the only way to please God and gain the blessings from above.

Let Us Pray: Lord Jesus Christ, help me to know you more and may the strength and grace I receive from my encounter with you help me to keep to the terms of the covenant and may I be blessed in you. Amen.
