The True Side of Christianity (Deut. 26:16-19/Psalm 119/Matthew 5:43-48)

"You have heard that it was said, you shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy, but I say to you, love your enemies and Ray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven" Matthew 5:43-45

Christianity is a practical religion that is based on the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. This means that anyone who wants to bear the name Christian and be true to it, must follow the teachings of Christ and live it out.

The people had the law that guided them before Jesus came, but he brought a new dimension to what they already know and practice. They were told to love their neighbours and hate their enemies, but Jesus said, love your enemies and pray for them when they persecute you.

He did not just teach it,  but he showed it practical on the cross when He prayed for those who offended Him and killed Him. He forgave them and by that way left us an example to follow if we intend to be His true disciples.

If you do not have this mentality of loving your enemies and praying for them, you will be living a false life as a Christian and you will never be a true disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our attitudes as Christians should mirror that of our Lord Jesus Christ and it is only when that is the case that we could confidently say that we belong to Him.

A Christianity that seeks revenge and how to pay pack evil with evil is not a true one and should not be practiced by those who follow Christ. If we must follow Christ we will be ready to love those who hurt us and pray that they will change and become better.

Jesus tasks us to be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect. This can only come when we make a resolve to keep God's commandment. If we do keep His word,  we will be holy and we will be honoured and set high above other nations as the Lord promised the people of Israel in the first reading.

Let us make the resolve to walk in the law of the Lord and we will find joy and happiness in serving Him. He will take care of us and will bless us and those who see us will come to believe in Him because we represent Him well.

Let Us Pray: Lord Jesus Christ, give me the grace to obey your commandment always and may I love out my Christian faith in a manner that is pleasing to you and through my attitude may souls be won to your kingdom. Amen.
