keep To the Pact You Have With God (Gen.9:8-15/Ps.25/1Pet.3:18-22/Mark 1:12-15)

"God said to Noah and to His sons with him, behold I establish my covenant with you and your descendants after you and with every living creature that is with you..." Genesis 9:8-10

The covenant that God had with the people of Israel from time to time was to make them keep His commandments so that they may be blessed and live. However, in most cases they did not keep to the covenant and as a result of that they suffered.

Today, the first Sunday of Lent we are presented with the story of how the Lord entered into a new covenant with Noah who obeyed God's instruction and built the ark and He and his household were kept safe from the flood.

by virtue of our baptism we have entered into a covenant with God and He expects us always to keep to it by way of obedience and total commitment.

This means that as Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit to fast and do a battle, we will also be led by the same Spirit to withdraw ourselves from the things of this life from time to time and if we remain steadfast we will definitely overcome.

The spiritual life is a continuous battle between good and evil, light and darkness. We as baptised Christians should endeavour to  remain faithful to our covenant commitment so that we will be able to fight the spiritual battle till the end. Jesus went to the desert and He conquered all His temptation, we must also follow in His example and make the withdrawal to the desert from time to time so that we can overcome our own temptations. To keep to the covenant we have entered into with God by virtue of our baptism is something we must hold dear in our heart and we should not allow anything to stop us from living up to our responsibility.

we can overcome our own temptations if we look at the example of Jesus and try to go closer to Him always. He will give us the strength to conquer our weakness and other things that will work against our being who God has called us to be. The power we need to overcome temptations and live up to our covenant commitment comes from God and we must not compromise our faith in Him if we intend to always live up to our calling as baptised Christians.

let Us Pray: Lord Jesus Christ, give me the grace to always come to you for strength so that I will be able to overcome the temptations that come my way. Give me the grace to always keep to the covenant commitment I have with you. Amen.
