The Joy Of Marriage (James 5:9-14/Ps.103/Mark 10:1-12)

We see in Jesus'answer to the pharisees who came to test Him the real meaning of marriage and what He expects of those who enter into marriage. By the fact that Jesus quoted for them what is written in the book of Genesis about marriage shows us the importance of the institution of marriage and that the coming together of a couple to form a family is a very beautiful act that pleases the lord.

When people get married, the whole atmosphere is filled with joy and love, however, sometimes as the couple continues to live together we tend to hear in some cases one or two issues of disagreement which if not checked and worked upon could deteriorate to the point where one of the couple or both could seek for divorce. We could see that God has no plans for couples to divorce, but that they should live together as one, educate their children and bring them up in the fear of the Lord.

Because we are humans, we may have difficulties and face challenges in marriages, but if our marriage is built in Christ and on the foundation of love and unity, then we will be able to overcome the challenges. Many marriages are crumbling in our time because of infidelity and lies. Some of the couples are no longer truthful and honest to themselves and as a result they are loosing it in terms of Bondedness and trust.

The Joy of marriage is in couples sticking together to face their challenges. It is in couples realizing that they are not perfect and complete, but they can complete, perfect and complement each other. It is in couples understanding the weakness and strength of each other and helping one another to grow strong and better always. It is in loving in good times and in bad moments, in sickness and in health, in wealth and in poverty till the end. It is in forgiving one another and being willing to ask for forgiveness when one is at fault.

When couples truly love themselves they will be willing to do everything positive to guide and protect their marriage from every attack both human and spiritual and when God is at the centre of a union He takes care of the couple and makes their family a perfect example for others to learn from. St. James tells us in the first reading not to swear on anything, but let our yes be yes and our no be no. This means that for any marriage to last the test of time the couples must respect each other and be truthful. They must not allow their individual selfishness, greediness, envy, jealousy, anyone or anything to put asunder in their union. Couples must learn to give peace a chance to reign in their union and pray fervently to God to help them to persevere till the end.

If you are passing through any hardship or challenge  in your marriage now, do not give up, try and identify what is causing the problem and try to see that it is settled. Ask for God's help and talk to the right persons who can help you get over it so that you will live out your marital promises to each other to the full. God wants you to be happy in your marriage and both of you that are married in Christ and in His Church can make it happen. Ask God to give you joy in your marriage, work for that Joy and you will see it become your irreplaceable possession of immense value. When couples are happy in their marriage, they will give birth to children who will grow up to bring joy to those around them and if couples are sad and always quarrelling, it is the same seed of discord and bitterness that they will sow into the lives of their children and in the end it will all be a loss for all. We must all work together to build happy families so that God will continue to be praised through us.

Let Us Pray: Dear Lord, many marriages are passing through tough times and many are on the verge of breaking up. please, heal every broken marriages and give couples the grace to love and cherish each other till the end. Amen.
